Toby, the Water Dog

Yes, Toby’s a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, but whenever we take him to a lake, he becomes a water dog. That’s because he absolutely loves water and he could spend hours swimming and playing on the beach.

Last year, when we took Toby swimming for the first time, we had reason to believe that he won’t like the water, since he hates when we give him a bath at home, in the bathtub. Toby is terrified by bath time. Every time he cries and tries to jump out of the bathtub. It breaks my heart to see him cry, because that’s the only time he actually cries and looks very scared, and he is behaving this way since he was a tiny puppy.

So, with all our bath time experiences in mind, we were a little bit worried that he won’t want to get near the water. Oh, we were so wrong! The very first time he went with his little short legs into lake he loved it. All he wanted to do after that was play in the water. We had a floating toy duck that we kept throwing in the water and he kept going after it every time with a big smile on his face. No matter how tired he would get, he would bring the duck at our feet so we can throw it in the lake. And the story repeated this year as well, at another lake.

We also had him do the “Corgi flop”, as you can see. He didn’t seem too impressed with it though, so he only jumped a couple of times.

Needless to say, both years when we came back from our vacation, our Corgi was depressed for a week after, because he missed the water. He doesn’t have any idea yet that we plan on taking him swimming again, very soon.

We started ours of in a baby pool with just an inch or two of water in it. Doesn’t take long to acclimate them for deeper water. It helps them feel safe and realize they can play in the waves they make as they move around.

I had a corgi-cocker mix who absolutely loved, loved, loved the water – like your Toby, as long as it wasn’t bath water. We lived in Boulder, Colorado, for most of his life and would regularly walk around a nearby reservoir. I walked more slowly than my dog who ran on his short legs from the parking lot to the water, turning around three or four times on his way to his beloved “lake” to make sure I was still coming. As soon as I was close enough, in he’d go. He’d walk or swim around the entire “lake” – venturing out to fetch balls as I tossed them farther into the water. He was so tenacious, his “sister”, Buffy, would have to rescue him by fetching balls that he couldn’t fit into his mouth for him. Buffy was the opposite of her brother: as a pure-bred Cocker, she did NOT like to get her beautiful parti-blond coat wet. Her love for her bro outweighed her distaste of getting wet, and so she’d swim out reluctantly to fetch his water-logged balls. My dear, intelligent water loving Corgi mix, also named Toby, died on Dec. 20, 2000, of congestive heart failure. I miss him to this day.

My pem Bugsy started digging in his water dish at 10 weeks old. I knew then he would be a water dog. He loves swimming in ponds and lakes, wading in steams or kiddie pools, he’ll even jump in the bath tub & bite the stream running from the tap! I always look for a place for him to take a dip as a reward for a long car ride/road trip.

My Ziva was the same way as Toby she absolutely hated bath time and our bathroom was always a disaster after spending nearly an hour trying to get her bath done. But we took her to the lake for the very first time and now you can’t keep her out of the water she now doesn’t mind bath time either which is a blessing and a whole lot less of a mess
