Our Corgi’s Trip to Michigan

Toby’s Week-end Getaway to Little Pleasant Lake, MI

We took our last vacation for this year. Actually, we would love to take Toby someplace in the winter, since he loves snow as much as he loves water, but I don’t know if I want to go through to process of finding a cabin that allows dogs. We’ll see… usually we have enough snow in the Chicago area during the winter months, than we don’t need to leave our backyard in search of a playground for Toby. After our mid-summer trip to Wisconsin, which was a blast for both the adults and Toby, we decided that we need to escape the city one more time before the fall arrives. This time I found a cute, private place with a small lake, in Michigan. The water was cold for me, but it didn’t bother our Corgi. He absolutely loved it, as you can see in the pictures.

We had him wear a vest since the first time we took him swimming, and this year we also let him go in the water without it. He didn’t seem to notice, but I could see that his body was sinking more into the water (leaving just his head on top of the water), and he also got tired faster; so my recommendation, especially for short Corgi legs, is to always put a vest on your dog, it gives you peace of mind, and it also helps keeping your pet afloat.

This place that we rented also had a huge grassy area that was great for running and playing fetch. Around the house we never get to see how fast Toby is, and to be honest, you wouldn’t expect a dog with such short legs to run that fast.

I don’t know if I mentioned it before, but Toby isn’t very fond of other dogs (must be the “short dog complex”, even though he barks at smaller dogs, too), this being one of the reasons why I wanted a private place. Unfortunately, he got to meet another dog, a female miniature pinscher, while we were there. Needless to say, he barked like crazy at her…until the pinscher started barking back, at which point, Toby ran and hid behind my boyfriend. That image was just priceless, and we came to the conclusion that he’s not aggressive when meeting other dogs, he’s just scared. I wonder why, though… We had a couple of dogs to the house, for play dates, and he wasn’t really bothered by them, he just smelled them.

Anyway, all in one, our vacation was nice, and our Corgi had a great time. He was so exhausted after 3 days of swimming and running that he slept through the 3-hour ride home (he usually gets very agitated when he’s in the car). Now he’s home and he’s looking forward to the first snow of the season.
